11 Things to Do In Chapinero, Bogotá

The Chapinero neighborhood is between Calle 53 and Calle 67, and Calle 21 and La Septima, Though not as popular with tourists as La Candelaria, it’s a window into an authentic urban Bogotá. Here are 10 things you should do while you are there.

1. See A Show At The Teatro Libre De Bogotá

El Teatro Libre has two locations, one in La Candelaria and the other in Chapinero. The theater was founded in 1973 and has since been one of Bogotá’s most influential stages for the development of theatrical arts in the city and Colombia. They work in conjunction with several universities in the city but also have their own governing body and company of performers. Expect to see plays from authors like Shakespeare, Strindberg, P. Weiss, Brecht, Tirso de Molina as well as Colombian playwrights such as, García Márquez, J. Plata, P. Bonnett, E. Navajas and E. Camacho.

Teatro Libre de Bogotá,

2. Football Game At Estadio Nemésio Camacho El Campín

El Campín stadium is the biggest stadium in Bogotá, with more than 36,000 seats. It was built in 1936 to commemorate the city’s 400th anniversary and is the home stadium for two of Colombia’s biggest premier league teams. Independiente Santa Fe and Millonarios F.C. play games throughout the year and have a massive fan base within the city. Throughout Latin America, football, or soccer, represents a major cultural activity, and Colombia is no different. If football isn’t your thing, the stadium also hosts other events throughout the year, from concerts to plays.

3. Casa Museo Jorge Eliecer Gaitán

If you’re interested in learning about the political and legal history in Colombia, the Jorge Eliecer Gaitán House Museum is the place to go. The museum is located at the old residence of Jorge Eliecer Gaitán, one of Colombia’s most important political figures and leaders. He led the populist movement in Colombia during his tenure as Education Minister, Labor Minister and mayor of Bogotá. He was assassinated in 1944 and was buried in his home, where he still rests today. The museum offers a political history of Bogotá and Colombia. You’ll learn about his life, politics and how they transformed the political discourse in Colombia today. Many other events and exhibits are displayed temporarily at the museum, such as photography and art exhibits that usually feature political or controversial themes.

4. Plaza Del Mercado De Paloquemao

Mercado de Palo Quemado is one of Bogotá’s biggest and most exciting daily markets. Though it’s often overlooked by most tourists, you won’t find a more authentic culinary experience. Throughout the aisles, you’ll find the freshest fruits and vegetables, the most beautiful flowers and the most authentic street food. Colombia has an incredible variety of produce that is not usually seen in other parts of the world. You could spend an entire morning sampling tropical fruits that we guarantee you’ve never had before. It’s best to go in the morning to find the best produce. Make sure to take cash and leave any large bulky items at your hotel, as the aisles can get quite crowded, especially on the weekends.

5.Theatron De Pelicula

Chapinero is known throughout Bogotá as the center of the city’s LGBTI community. So much so that the neighborhood is often called ‘Chapigay.’ It should then come as no surprise that Chapinero has some of the best nightlife in the city. Theatron is considered the biggest gay nightclub, not just in Latin America, but the world. It has five floors, 13 different sections, and occupies an entire block of the neighborhood. Saturday is their busiest and most exciting night. All the sections are open and usually feature special performers, from the most fabulous drag queens to singers and dancers. The club is open to everyone, and you’ll never see a party quite like nights at Theatron.

6. Shopping At Centro Comercial Andino

Centro Comercial Andino, is one of Bogotá’s most beautiful and diverse shopping malls. The mall features a variety of stores from brands in every price range, from Dolce & Gabbana to Steve Madden. The majority of the stores are international brands from the United States and Europe, but there are several Colombian brands worth visiting. The widely successful Tennis and Studio F both originated in Colombia and have grown to be two of the most recognized stores in the country. For anyone hoping to do some serious shopping while visiting Bogotá, you won’t find a better place.

7. Eat

The restaurants in Chapinero are some of the best in the city, serving a variety of dishes made from the best products available. There are restaurants for every budget, from delicious street food to fancy fine dining. If you’re looking for authentic Colombian cuisine, try Andres D.C. or Restaurante Club Colombia. Seafood lovers must visit Central Cevicheria, and if you’re hoping to explore the high-end culinary arts, Criterion and Astrid & Gastón are exceptional choices. Street food in Colombia is also something you can’t miss. Try a freshly toasted arepa with cheese, or if you’re craving something sweet, obleas and arequipe.

8. Ciclovia Bogotá

Every Sunday, Bogotá’s bustling metropolis is transformed into a cyclist’s dream city. Many major roads and streets close from 7 am to 2 pm to create a bike path that runs throughout the city. At public parks and stadiums, fitness instructors teach free classes to the public, while runners, walkers, skaters, and cyclists take full advantage of the bike paths. A major part of the path runs through the Chapinero neighborhood and renting a bike or going for a run is a great way to get to know the city and meet locals and tourists who enjoy the outdoor activity on a Sunday morning. Visit the Bogotá’s visitor website to find out more about the route and where to find everything you need to enjoy Sundays like the locals.

9. GALERIAS AREA is one of entreatments hubs in Bogota with plenty of bars, restaurant, clubs, and shopping center.

10. La Negra

If you’re looking for a more relaxed club experience, La Negra is a great place to hear and see authentic Colombian music and dance. The bar and nightclub’s eclectic, colorful and Afro-Caribbean theme feels like a beautiful balance between Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights and a modern nightclub. The bar often has live bands performing music across many genres, from reggae to traditional Colombian cumbia. Don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes, because you’ll be dancing all night.

11. Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes

In the heart of Chapinero is the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes. It is a beautiful Catholic basilica and remains one of the city’s most recognized religious symbols. It was built in 1875 and was consecrated in 1904. It was the first Gothic style construction built in Colombia and remains one of the most visited churches in the city. The interior is just as beautiful as the exterior, with white walls, gold accents and features. The plaza surrounding the church is also quite a spectacle. You’ll see street performers, vendors, musicians, magicians and families enjoying the fresh air and open space.

Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes,
Lovely studio apartments for 2 people in a recently refurbished building located in the heart of CHAPINERO the most emblematic, financial & central area of the capital.

Bogotá, Kolumbiya

Chapinero is the best located neighbourhood Bogotá´s. We are minutes away of attractions such as Parque Nacional (10min), Museo Nacional de Colombia (15 min), Museo de Oro (15 min), Teatro Colón (20 min), etc. My apartment is located near Javeriana University and Piloto University. Carulla supermarket is located near, and Fast food restaurants, such as Pizza Hut, Domino´s, Burger King. Some blocks north or south (no more than 15 min) are great gourmet restaurants areas with international and local food.
Also, We have few Shopping centres like Avenida Chile, Centro Andino & Galerias
One of the main bus stations of the world award system call Transmilenio is just in front of the building. It takes approximately 15 minutes from here to Downtown Bogotá.
There's a 24-hour convenience store a few feet from the front door if you need anything else.
During your stay i´m Cell Phone, e-mail and available.
Chapinero & La Candelaria Bogota

This article has links to products and services we love, which we may make commission from.
Did you know that it rains most days in Colombia’s capital, Bogota? I know, it was a surprise to me (Gemma) too! Hence the greater need to find cool things to do in Bogota come rain or shine. Here’s a lowdown on the two distinct areas of Bogota, La Candelaria v Chapinero, where you’ll find accommodation, food, nightlife, and tourist attractions.
Chapinero
Things to do in Chapinero
The area itself had heaps of restaurants and local cafes. There is every type of cuisine on your doorstep. Craig enjoyed a typical Colombian breakfast of Caldo de Costilla which is soup with meat and potatoes!
The grid system of Bogota makes navigation super easy, even for a map killer like me! (About) ten blocks (max) north of Fulano Backpackers you will find the jumping area of Zona G. We walked back at night and felt safe but taxicabs are so cheap you don’t need to worry about the price (7 COP / £1.75 from Fulanos). There are two apps that you can use to get even cheaper taxi services, Uber and Easy Taxi.
We dined at La Hamburgueseria whilst listening to a Colombian band do reggae! Honestly, there are heaps of restaurants in Bogota and Zona G has an eclectic mix of them so you can please everyone!
During the day you will also find a shiny shopping centre but most shops are outwith a backpacker’s budget! Alternatively, Carrera 14 has lots of preloved clothes shops if you need to replenish your outfits. Not to deviate from Chapinero just yet, my favourite shop at Zona G was an ice cream shop which sells delicious ice lollies. I mean heavily delicious ice lollies! Who cares if it’s raining? Eating ice cream was one of my favourite things to do in Bogota!

You’ll see lots of locals hanging about Zona G, it also had an open art exhibition on while we were there.
There is a lot of green space in Chapinero; we walked to Parque 93, which is on Calle 93, funny enough. It had a dog park within and is also surrounded by lots of restaurants and bars such as Bogota Beer Company. We probably wouldn’t have found all of these places if it wasn’t for the kindness of our Colombian friend, Ricardo, whom we met for ten minutes on Taquile Island in Peru. He insisted on taking us on a tour of his beloved city. We are very grateful of this and his friendship!
Ricardo, Colombian friend and impromptu tour guide
Bogota Hostels, Chapinero
The red-bricked houses of Chapinero could easily be confused for Manchester in England. We stayed at Fulano Backpackers, which is high up on our favourites list for hostels so far.

I loved its clean and minimalist feel. We stayed in an eight-bed dorm which was spacious and comfortable. The showers were always scorching and they even have a separate showering area for the ladies!

There is a kitchen, which you can prepare and cook your own food but the bar also sells breakfast for 5 (£1.25) or 8 COP (£2.00) depending on your choice. We spent 71 COP / £17.72 over two nights at the bar, succumbing to happy hour on both nights where I enjoyed mojitos the size of my head!

A DJ played both the Friday and the Saturday night, throwing out a mix of European dance music and Colombian tunes.
The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, they even let us leave our cabin bag in storage for three weeks! And most importantly (?) the WiFi was fast which meant I could catch up on the blogging I missed in La Paz.

La Candelaria
Things to do in La Candelaria
Stick to 7th if you get lost in Bogota, one of the tour guides from the outstanding Bogota Graffiti Tour advised us. This advice put us in good stead for the trip. 7th is the Sauchiehall Street of Bogota. You’ll find lots of shops and buskers.

La Candelaria is in the South of the city and is where most of the epic graffiti lives but don’t just stare at the images, learn the story behind the street art…

Bogota Graffiti Tour
The one thing you can’t miss in Bogota is the Graffiti Tour. Rey and Jay (American / Colombians) take you on a two and half hour tour of the city’s street art, providing very detailed explanations of the artists’ artwork. There is a large variety of street art so there is a lot to be said. The artists all have their own story and some are internationally known. We asked how the artists felt about tagging which is a nuisnace in Scotland, but they said they didn’t mind it as it was a ‘way in’ to the good stuff. There’s even an area at the local school where the artists support the students during projects (with police protection at night if necessary). This really set the vibes for Colombia for me, it is such an incredible country. If you like street art you might be interested to hear that my lesser-known home region in Scotland, Fife, has started to commission work, read about the emerging scene here.
Many of La Candelaria hostels have graffitied facades; many were commissioned by the owners which is cool. Rolos (people from Bogota) are obviously pretty liberal!
Bogota Graffiti Tour – top for things to do in Bogota

•What: RSVP up here * no affiliation, it’s just damn kickass!
•Where: Parque de Los Periodistas
•When: 10am and 2pm every day
•How much: For tips (20,000 – 30,000 COP / £4.99 – £7.49
Bogota Hostels, La Candelaria

We stayed at Hostal Bakano which was nice enough, not the most social which was fine for us as we were preparing to go to Cuba at this point. It is definitely in the heart of La Candelaria. Staff spoke only Spanish but were very accommodating.
La Candelaria Restaurants
We dined at Dos Gatos y Simone which is a Mexican fusion restaurant. I went for the mango salad which had beef, cheese and nuts through it. We were even envious of everyone’s food around us and vowed to go back but it was closed on the Sunday when we returned!
I loved the colours of Calle Jon del Embudo, we were told this was the spot for great nightlife in Bogota so we took a stroll for drinks but it appears to be pretty dead on a Sunday night. We had one Chicha Color y Sabor, which tasted like acid, not very pleasant! On the wander home we stumbled across cool bar with a local indie band, ahhh, don’t you just love cities?

Bogota Weather
Be prepared for the weather! Forget your initial image of piña coladas in pineapples in the sunshine (save that for the North!) as it actually rains most days in Bogota so make use of the extensive bus service.
