Neighbourhoods

Islington is one of London’s trendiest, most eclectic neighbourhoods, boasting a rich history and a strong sense of community. The area's posh-meets-street vibe is a magnet for creative types: locals have included George Orwell, Lily Allen and what seems like half the cast of popular soap EastEnders. Just moments from Central London, Highbury & Islington station is only a seven-minute Tube ride from Oxford Circus.

Canonbury remains a sliver of Georgian good taste between the madness of Upper Street and the dirtiness of Dalston. Few of us will ever get to live here. Yet George Orwell dwelt in the neighbourhood when it was more down at heel, and made the local Compton Arms famous by using it as a model for an idealised London pub (the Moon Under Water) in a famous essay of 1946. Just round the corner is the Canonbury Tavern, recently reopened by Young’s. You know what to expect of a Young’s pub. They’re often in locations where you’re pleased to find a grand pub, and usually decorated in inoffensive greys. Here they serve pub grub and, in the dining room, more ambitious dishes. If you’re used to Kernel and Weird Beard, you may find Young’s beer timid by comparison. The Canonbury also sells a couple from Camden Town brewery. And it has other draws. It’s huge, a series of elegant rectilinear rooms, and the rear garden is equally enormous. Orwell might not have considered the Canonbury his perfect pub, but it’s a solid success.

Sightseeing

Camden Passage is a picturesque walkway lined by antique stores, vintage shops and quirky boutiques, plus a handful of great cafés and restaurants. At weekends, there’s a charming little market selling clothes, knick-knacks and antiques. Most restaurants offer al fresco dining, and the street’s namesake pub, the Camden Head – one of the homes of Angel Comedy – has a lovely little beer garden.

Regent’s Canal runs through the heart of Islington and offers a gorgeous spot to while away a sunny day. When the weather’s right, join the crowds barbecuing and drinking along the canal, or settle down at a waterside café and watch the barges go by.

Known as the ‘People’s Park’, Victoria Park is one of London’s favourite open spaces. Stretched over a huge 86.18 hectares, this swath of the outdoors is nestled entirely in Tower Hamlets. In the summer it’s often taken over by festivals like Field Day and Lovebox. In May and June 2018 it’s playing host to All Points East, a brand new ten-day event, which includes a three day music festival and a midweek programme of community events. In the autumn park-goers are treated to epic fireworks displays, but that’s not all: parts of the park are Grade II-listed and it was originally landscaped by the famous architect Sir James Pennethorne in 1842. Worth looking out for are the Dogs of Alcibiades statues, Burdett-Coutts Fountain and two stone alcoves from the original London Bridge. There are two expansive lakes (one with a Chinese pagoda island), a boating pond and Vicky Park is wonderful for youngsters: the V&A Playground is equipped with swings and other bits and bobs to play on and the fantastically designed Pools Playground encourages creative play. It’s also the place to go for outdoor pursuits with tennis courts, a bowling green and running track, plus football and cricket pitches. And if you work up a thirst? There's the Pavilion Café, where you can grab a bite to eat before kicking back in the splendour of Pennethorne's lovely vision.
